The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking Team is monitoring two areas of disturbed weather for potential tropical development this weekend. This is reduced from four that we were tracking earlier this week.
Thankfully, none pose a direct threat to our local community for now.
Area to monitor #1: Southwest Gulf of Mexico
The region of the tropics with the highest chance of development is in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.
As of Friday afternoon, the chances of development in this part of the Gulf have been increased to 50% over the next seven days.
Areas to monitor #2: The Atlantic basin
The second area we are monitoring is an elongated low pressure region coming off the west coast of Africa. There is a low chance that a more concentrated area of low pressure may develop within this area next week. For now, it remains an unorganized region of showers and thunderstorms.
Though no systems in the tropics are threatening our area now, it's important to remember we're just entering what's normally the most active time of the season.
