The Lee County Sheriff's Office arrested a man early Sunday morning on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after shooting his roommate in a home on Coon Road.
According to LCSO, Matthew Smith, 40, called 911 confessing to the shooting.
When deputies arrived, Smith walked out of the home and surrendered.
The victim was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center, LCSO said.
Ryan Clayton, a neighbor, expressed his disbelief as LCSO cars and crime scene units lined the street all morning. "I've got kids here. It's a working-class neighborhood."
Detectives were seen entering and exiting the right side of a duplex, collecting evidence related to the incident.
Clayton said, "We don't want to ever see something like this happen again. For my kids' sake, for everybody in the neighborhood's sake."
Clayton emphasized the community's concern for safety, especially for the children in the area.
The landlord, speaking off-camera, mentioned that Smith had only lived in the duplex for about a year.
