New 911 calls show the tense moments after a man is accused of shooting his roommate in a North Fort Myers neighborhood.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office arrested Matthew Steven Smith, 40, early Sunday morning after a shooting on Coon Road sent a man to the hospital.
Deputies say Smith called 911.
In the call, the operator asked Smith, "Was this intentional?" to which the caller is heard replying, "Yeah, he beat me up, yes, ma'am."
When deputies arrived on the scene, LCSO said the suspect exited the residence and surrendered himself.
Inside, deputies say they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Gulf Coast Medical Center.
Deputies recovered a handgun from inside the residence.
Ryan Clayton, a neighbor, expressed his disbelief as LCSO cars and crime scene units lined the street all morning.
"I've got kids here. It's a working-class neighborhood," Clayton said.
Detectives were seen entering and exiting the right side of a duplex, collecting evidence related to the incident.
Clayton said, "We don't want to ever see something like this happen again. For my kids' sake, for everybody in the neighborhood's sake."
Clayton emphasized the community's concern for safety, especially for the children in the area.
The landlord, speaking off-camera, mentioned that Smith had only lived in the duplex for about a year.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office has not disclosed what led to the shooting or the current condition of the victim.
