We all know biking on Sanibel is very popular - especially for those on vacation or looking to take a day trip.
City council is now deciding what bikes can and can't be used on certain shared-use paths.
Sanibel City Council passed an ordinance on Monday allowing only class one E-bikes on the path. Those are bikes you must pedal to engage.
Some neighbors were also pushing council to allow class two E-bikes on the path. Those are bikes that just require a throttle to engage.
Ultimately, council members decided against allowing those types of bikes. Remember, this limitation is just for the shared-us path.
All types of bikes are allowed on city streets.
According to city records, there has also been a handful of bike-related crashes over the years - raising safety concerns and prompting some of these discussions.
Another change worth mentioning - the city decided to drop the age to operate a bike from 18-years-old to 16.
This gives families with teens another option during vacations and day-trips.
The City Manager is also set to establish speed limits on bike paths that can't exceed 20 miles per hour.
The city is hoping all of this will make things a whole lot safer for everyone.
