During Hurricane season you need to stay prepared - that includes knowing your evacuation routes in the event of a major hurricane or flooding.
If you live in Cape Coral, your route is the same as thousands of others - cross the bridge, drive through Fort Myers and then make your way to I-75.
The issue getting 200,000 people over the bridges means bottlenecking can happen. It would take more than 73 hours to get everyone over.
That's more than three days to evacuate from Cape Coral.
Cape city leaders will hear data from a new study on a plan to cut that down by nearly 20 hours. The goal is to have this support in place before 2045.
The major areas to help get nearly 200,000 people quicker would be widening the Midpoint Bridge and getting an interchange to I-75 from Del Prado Boulevard.
City staff hopes to present this to county planners and FDOT to get more funding to expedite these projects.
There is no timetable as of now.
