New information about a Fort Myers couple that was shot in last weekend's mass shooting on I-75 in Kentucky has emerged.
Renee Walker and Erick Tabin were driving back from her mother's 92nd birthday celebration in Michigan when the shooter opened fire.
Joseph Couch, 32, is accused of shooting down from three different perches along I-75 in Laurel County on Saturday. The sheriff's office says Couch struck twelve cars and five people with bullets.
Walker told NBC2 that a bullet shattered Erick's elbow. Tabin is still in the hospital and will have a second surgery on Wednesday.
Glass debris sprayed Renee's face, but she has been discharged from the hospital. Their two dogs in the back seat were not hurt.
Officials confirmed another victim was shot in the face and a woman was shot across the chest.
Officials believe Couch fled into the wooded area near the interstate, and in an update on Monday - Kentucky State Police say they hope Couch is being "worn down" and will eventually come out of the woods.
According to data, 48% of Kentucky is covered by forestland - which is about 12.4 million acres. The forest is home to cliffs, sinkholes, caves, culverts, and creeks and rivers – all of which complicate the hunt for Couch.
“It’s kind of like a jungle,” said Kentucky State Police spokesperson Scottie Pennington on Monday.
Pennington said they're using drones to search the wooded area for any signs of Couch.
In an affidavit supporting the charges, Couch allegedly texted a woman on Saturday around 5:03 p.m. stating, "I'm going to kill a lot of people. Well try at least."
He then allegedly sent another text saying, "I'll kill myself afterward."
Kentucky State Police have announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Joseph Couch. He is 5'10", 154 pounds, and is considered armed and dangerous.
Law enforcement has said that they think Couch may still be armed and should be considered dangerous.
A family friend told NBC2 that Renee and Erick are very grateful for everyone's support and they hope to be back in Southwest Florida soon.
