A Charlotte County family says they want to offer up their 40 acre property for the possibility of adding a grocery store or urgent care to the Burnt Store Road area.
However, there is a few more steps they have to go through first.
One person after another told Charlotte County commissioners Tuesday why they want them to allow this land on Burnt Store Rd to be rezone for commercial use.
The roughly 40 acre land across from Peppercorn Drive is currently home to grass and wildflowers.
William Fischer and his wife want to bring in medical care and fresh produce.
"Some type of urgent care facility. that would be beneficial to the people, you know, not only locally, but if the other, adjacent ones are full, which has been our experience. Something else as an overflow," Fischer said.
County commissioners and their staff are somewhat hesitant.
Turning the land into a commercial zone not only allows it to become grocery stores, but storage facilities and private clubs as well.
"Our part of our job is to help protect the public and make sure if this is what they're looking to get, that we can make sure that those are the types of things that'll get," Charlotte County Planning & Zoning Official Shaun Cullinan said.
Additionally, there is a another problem.
"There was, conflicting, opinions about the validity and the outcomes of that traffic study that was done. So we need to work that out with them," Cullinan said.
The county did take one step forward.
"An adjustment to what we would say, the comprehensive plan," Burnt Store Road Corridor Coalition member Dr. Mary Ellen Kiss said.
There is still a good way to go before you can expect any type of stores on the land. Dr. Mary Ellen Kiss and so many others hope it comes before 2050.
As the Burnt Store Rd itself, earlier this year Lee County commissioners approved expanding the road from Van Buren Parkway to just north of the Charlotte County line.
The road will now be four lanes instead of two, and if needed - it will be expanded into six lanes in the future.
