As Francine moves farther inland over Louisiana and weakens rapidly, the NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Team is monitoring several tropical disturbances in the Atlantic basin.
Tropical Depression Seven
A new tropical depression has formed west of the Cabo Verde Islands in the far eastern Atlantic.
Tropical Depression Seven is tracking west-northwest at 17 mph with winds sustained at 35 mph. The system is in an environment with moderate wind shear but very warm sea surface temperatures so gradual strenghtening is likely over the coming days. The next name on the list is Gordon.
There's currently no indication it would be a threat to land, but we'll keep watching to be sure.
Areas #2 and #3
Ahead of area TD7, we're tracking two more tropical waves with a low-end chance of developing into a tropical system. Development odds over the next 7 days are at 10 percent for both disturbances.
Both disturbances are moving west toward the Lesser Antilles. Environmental conditions are expect to become less favorable for development later in the week as both features move into an area of increasing wind shear, which will likely close the door on any potential development.
Area #4
The last area we're monitoring is a front draped across the southeastern U.S. A non-tropical area of low pressure could develop along the front a few hundred miles off the southeastern U.S. coastline, and a subtropical or tropical storm could form here next week. The system will most likely meander over the Gulf Stream and drift slowly northward. Even if a storm develops, though, it would not be a threat to Florida.
