The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Team is monitoring several tropical disturbances in the Atlantic basin.
The most organized of the tropical features we're tracking is Tropical Depression Seven in the fast eastern Atlantic Ocean.
As of 5 p.m. Thursday, Tropical Depression Seven was producing winds of 35 mph as it moves toward the west-northwest at 16 mph.
For now the system is in an environment with moderately strong wind shear but very warm sea surface temperatures. Given this, gradual strengthening is likely over the coming days and the system is forecast to soon become Tropical Storm Gordon.
There's currently no indication it would be a threat to land as this system will be over the open ocean for a while. We'll keep you informed should it become a system we need to be concerned about in our area.
Far west of Tropical Depression 7 there are two areas being monitored for tropical development. The first is just east of the Lesser Antilles with development odds at 30% over the next 7 days.
The area we're monitoring off the east coast of the United States is connected to a front that could develop into a subtropical or tropical system a few hundred miles off the southeastern U.S. coastline.
This system will most likely meander over the Gulf Stream and drift slowly northward, so even if something does form it would not be a factor in Florida's weather.
