Allegations have come to light against Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno, accusing him of laundering money and misappropriating funds.
A 17-year Lee County Sheriff's Office veteran and current write-in candidate for sheriff, Michael Hollow, legally recorded a conversation with a former consultant and honorary Lee County deputy, Ken Romano.
On Friday, NBC2 first reported a recorded conversation in which Romano confessed that the sheriff had hired him as a consultant, with part of his salary given in cash to Marceno's father to help him pay for a new car. Hollow said he legally recorded the conversation and turned it over to the FBI.
Sheriff Marceno responded to the allegations with the following statement:
"It’s unfortunate that politics have reached this level. These politically-motivated and baseless claims from a disgruntled former employee are obviously untrue. It’s sad that some people would engage in such vicious personal attacks for political purposes. I’m proud to be the Sheriff of Lee County. We provide an outstanding level of service to the great residents of the county and will continue to do so."
