The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking team is monitoring two features in the tropics. The first feature is impacting the Carolinas while the second is far away from land over the open Atlantic Ocean.
System 1: Potential Tropical Cyclone 8
The National Hurricane Center will no longer update developments of Potential Cyclone 8 as it never became a fully tropical system before moving onshore. Despite not being a tropical system, flooding was a major impact in North Carolina. Some areas received over 12" of rain in less than 12 hours.
System 2: Tropical Depression Gordon
The storm system that was formerly Tropical Storm Gordon in the open Atlantic Ocean has weakened to the point that it is now considered to be a tropical depression.
The forecast for Gordon calls for it to restrengthen back into a tropical storm this week, but as it takes a sharp turn toward the north. Thankfully Gordon's anticipated path will keep it away from land.
While there are no other areas being watched for development at this time, one area we'll watching for potential development over the next couple of weeks is the western Caribbean.
