Lee County Commissioners are meeting on Tuesday to discuss some major topics involving taxpayer dollars.
One thing on the agenda is whether or not to greenlight a new park in Lehigh Acres, with an estimated cost of more than $10 million.
The idea is to have it go along the Able Canal, which runs for six miles.
There is nothing currently pretty about the canal bank at the moment, but officials are hoping to make the park very nice.
The plan is to have a six-mile-long linear park, with shared-use pathways, a bike and pedestrian bridge and more.
The Municipal Services Improvement District wants it to connect to various parks, including Lehigh Acres Trailhead Park and Lehigh Elementary School.
In terms of cost, the Florida Department of Transportation will contribute about $4.4 million, and lee County is set to pay an additional $9.5 million.
NBC2 spoke with residents who say they are really hoping this project gets approved, because right now there aren't many walking paths in the area.
"I think it’s very important to have places people can go to walk walk the dogs and just enjoy the outdoors and nature," Lehigh Acres resident Dennis Behrens said. "We need one out here because we’re growing population. You can look around and see all the new homes being built everywhere not just in one area it’s all over."
If approved, construction is set to begin late in 2024, with a tentative completion date of fall 2026.
