A 24-year-old accused of brutally killing his mom and attempting to kill his two sisters is not going to trial anytime soon. Charlotte County deputies arrested Connor Crumrine in December 2023.
Investigators say he stabbed his mom multiple times. She eventually died later at a hospital. According to the 911 call, Crumrine then attacked one of his sisters.
Crumrine was evaluated by two doctors this summer and ultimately declared incompetent to stand trial. One doctor suggested the 24-year-old may have bipolar disorder. The other doctor noted a possible schizophrenia diagnosis. Both agreed the man doesn't have the mental capacity to move forward in the case right now.
Crumrine violently denies any mental illness. He wrote a letter to the judge asking for things to progress in his case as quickly as possible "so he can return to work." Criminal defense attorney Scott Weinberg said that is considered ex parte communication, therefore the judge can't consider it.
Weinberg said a key component in being declared incompetent is the inability to reasonably work with or understand your lawyer. He explained the state makes every attempt to rehabilitate a person so that criminal proceedings can move forward.
There is a hearing scheduled for this case in mid-December.
