Cape Coral city leaders are considering lowering the speed limit on both local and major roadways. The city found that the likelihood of crashes significantly increases when cars are traveling above 30 mph.
The speed limit on busy roads like Santa Barbara Boulevard, is currently set at 45 mph, but city leaders say that's too high.
The Transportation Advisory Board met today to discuss a study to identify which roads may benefit from lower limits, targeting local streets with 15-20 mph limits and major roads at 35-45 mph.
Senior Trooper Kenneth R. Watson from the Florida Highway Patrol stressed that speed is a crucial factor in safety, particularly in residential areas where children and pets are present.
Mayor John Gunter expressed concerns that current 30 mph limits may still be too high, emphasizing that safety is the top priority as the city continues to grow.
Cape Coral residents like Logan Marquardo said to have safer roads, more needs to be done than just lower speed limits. He advocated for a community-wide commitment to safer driving practices.
