There is a lot of excitement for the possible Bonita Estero Rail Trail's future.
A few years from now, we will be able to walk and bike this abandoned railway from Estero Community Park to Koreshan - or anywhere on its 15 mile track.
However, we're not quite full steam ahead as of now.
We're getting an update on Friday from Trust for Public Land - one of the national partners working to fund the $82 million project.
Lee, Collier, Estero and Bonita still have to purchase the land.
Already raising $10 million, hoping to raise $17 million more - and get federal and state grants next year to fund the rest.
Lee County MPO tells NBC2 they've gotten a lot of comments excited for:
- Added safety away from traffic
- Another way to get around besides traffic
- Added health benefits to get out
In fact, more than 3,300 neighbors - and 26 HOAs are supporting the trail's creation, but the land needs to be purchased by March 2026.
So that leaves just over a year and a half to get things started.
