Businesses in Downtown Fort Myers clean up...

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Although Downtown Fort Myers didn't see the worst of Hurricane Helene, they were far from unscratched. Multiple businesses in the area reported flooding. NBC2 spent the day in Downtown Fort Myers watching businesses clean up the mess.

"I feel pretty lucky considering what it could have been with that amount of water," said Kevin Offerman, the owner of City Tavern.

"We only got a few inches of water inside, but there is still enough damage to cause damage to drywall and baseboards. Start the drywall process immediately," said Wyatt Teneyck, the general manager of Social House.

"Considering how far away the storm was, I figured we'd have some wind damage, you know, things like that, but I didn't expect a foot and a half of water in here and these fences to completely come down," Teneyck said.

"We did lose some equipment that we had on the floor, some speakers," Offerman said.

NBC2 ran into Russell Hensel using his pressure washer on Friday on Bay Street, he knows how much a helping hand can provide to those in need especially after a hurricane.

"The owner of the business that I was helping out at they were hit, three years ago with the same exact situation. If everybody comes in and tackles a water issue quickly, it doesn't lead to a mold issue," Hensel said.

Neighbors helping neighbors, one step at a time.

"That's what it's all about, especially in Florida with these disasters always coming or these situations always coming, you never know when they're going to happen, but if we all come together, it just makes everything a lot easier," he said.
