Hurricane Helene made its way through Florida as a dangerous Category 4 storm, leaving behind plenty of destruction, trash and debris.
Many are left wondering, how do I properly gather trash for crews to collect it?
Lee County Solid Waste encourages residents to be aware of steps they can take to help collections now that Helene has passed by.
First, you can start by placing debris in the right way for collection. Crews will not enter private property to remove debris.
Large, bulky items - such as furniture and appliances - can be placed at the curb next to your regular garbage.
If an item does not fit in the regular collection truck, crews will notify the home office and a separate truck will come within two business days to pick it up.
With the weekend starting, residents are asked to put yard waste in containers or bundle it. It must be placed in a container that weighs 50 pounds or less.
It can also be placed into neatly stacked bundles, which cannot weigh more than 50 pounds or be longer than six feet.
Additionally, up to 50 pounds of unbundled palm fronds can be placed at the curb. Any excess palm fronds should be tied into bundles.
Crews ask that you do not bag debris. Instead, set it out in separate piles. This includes: Normal household trash, vegetation, construction and demolition, appliances and electr0nics.
Do not set hazardous waste at the curb. Crews ask that you take it to the Household Chemical and Electronic Waste Facility located at 6441 Topaz Court in Fort Myers.
