The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking team is keeping track of several features in the tropics.
There are two named storms in the Atlantic basin, but both are not a threat to the U.S.
As of Sunday afternoon, the system is spinning in the open Atlantic and will track northwest over the next few days before curving harmlessly north and then dissipating.
We're also tracking Hurricane Isaac in the open Atlantic, which is also forecast to be another fish storm; staying away from land.
The main area of interest is in the Caribbean Sea, where an area of low pressure could form in the next couple of days.
Environmental conditions are expected to be favorable for gradual development as the potential system moves generally northwestward, potentially entering the Gulf of Mexico by the middle of next week.
Since any potential development is roughly a week away, it's way too early to speculate on whether or not there would be impacts to the U.S. down the road. The most recent model runs have a weaker system forming, but are still inconsistent with strength and direction.
Though there is no chance of development over the next two days, the National Hurricane Center is highlighting this area with a 50% chance to develop in the next 7 days.
Elsewhere in the tropics, we're monitoring two more tropical disturbances. The area highlighted in red currently has development odds at 80% in the next 2 days, where it could become a tropical depression. This will most likely take the next storm which is Kirk.
The other is a tropical wave with a low chance of developing in the next 7 days. Neither disturbance is considered a threat to land at this time.
