The Lee County Port Authority will begin the airport expansion at RSW on Oct. 2.
According to a press release, the Board of Port Commissioners approved the budget for construction on Sept. 5.
The more than $1 billion project will add 14 additional gates to a new concourse.
The release says the goal is to be able to meet the anticipated increase in passengers.
The airport expansion will also include:
- Ticketing lobby
- Bag claim area
- Baggage handling system
- New Concourse E with 14 initial gates
- Infrastructure to support 19 gates in the future
- New transportation security checkpoint
- Expanded retail and food and beverage concessions
- Airside improvements
- Chiller plant building upgrades
- Road and curbside improvements that will reconfigure and expand terminal access roadways
The project is being funded by airport revenue bonds, federal grants from the Federal Aviation Administration, passenger facility charges and state grants from the Florida Department of Transportation.
