Capt’n Con’s Fish House is standing resilient in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, with only a 2-foot seawall separating it from the Charlotte Harbor.
All the damage left owner Luretta Wilson uncertain about the restaurant’s future. “This is the closest we came to losing it out of all the storms that we’ve had,” she said. Wilson says Helene's impact has been the most challenging in her 30 years of operation.
Water flooded the restaurant, submerging nearly everything, including its equipment.
Wilson found the hope to keep her beloved establishment with the support of her family and the local community.
Wilson's family dedicated countless hours from sunrise to sunset, and sometimes even overnight, to cleaning up the devastation. Navigating through the chaos was challenging, with freezers and equipment scattered throughout the kitchen.
Despite the overwhelming damage, the family salvaged what they could. Community support played a vital role in its recovery, with donations of refrigerators, freezers, chairs and financial contributions pouring in.
For Wilson, the drive to reopen is about more than business — it’s about bringing joy to her community. “If I could make one person smile, that made my day,” she said, emphasizing her commitment to serving others.
