Improvements are underway at Jaycee Park Monday morning, and things are starting to be removed.
The picnic tables that sit along the Caloosahatchee River, trash cans, signs, and memorial benches are all going to be taken away.
We spoke with a few people who are frequent visitors of Jaycee Park and share that they will be taking it all in before the outdoors furniture is gone.
"It's just, it's coming to the realization that, you know, this thing is really going to be happening," said Cape Coral resident, Steve Wickwire.
Wickwire comes to Jaycee Park during the dark early hours of morning to capture photos of the sunrise. He says he's already searching for his next location to capture his pictures, but no other place can compare. "I've been looking, but I haven't found another place like this in this general area. So, hopefully I will be able to, to get my sunrises because, I don't know what I'll do without them," said Wickwire.
Wickwire is not the only one who is on the lookout for a new place to go for when construction begins, Denise Helfrich says her and "the Calendar Girls" come to Jaycee Park to practice their dance routines weekly.
"It's very difficult to find a nice park again with trees, grass, restrooms, and of course, the beautiful breeze," Helrich said.
According to the city of Cape Coral, they have reached out to people associated with the memorial benches and will handle it based on their wishes.
City staff says they will safely store all other items and figure out what to do with them in the future.
The park will remain open.
