The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking team is keeping track of several features in the tropics.
The area closest to home is in the Caribbean Sea, where an area of low pressure could form in the next couple of days. Chances for development are up to 50 percent and a tropical depression is likely to form by the middle of the week as the disturbance drifts northwest.
Since the disturbance is several days out from forming, it's still too early to determine a specific track or intensity but everyone along the U.S. Gulf Coast needs to be monitoring this closely.
Elsewhere in the tropics, there are three systems that have formed and another area of interest.
Tropical Depression Joyce is spinning in the open Atlantic and is expected to weaken to a post-tropical cyclone Monday. We're also tracking Tropical Storm Isaac in the far northern Atlantic, which is also expected to weaken to a post-tropical cyclone Monday.
Tropical Depression 12 has also formed in the eastern tropical Atlantic and is forecast to become a major hurricane this week, but will not affect any land.
The last area we are watching is a tropical wave in the far eastern tropical Atlantic with a 60 percent chance of developing in the next 7 days. The disturbance is not considered a threat to land at this time.
