Rural communities in Collier County are now receiving mosquito control services, thanks to a new law that expands the Collier Mosquito Control District's coverage by over 300 square miles.
The expansion follows Governor Ron DeSantis' signing of House Bill 509 earlier this year.
One of the new areas included is Six L's Farm, where resident Bo Brewton has lived for 24 years. Brewton, who hosts a yearly musical gathering, says the mosquitoes have always been a problem for his guests.
"Every year, we let our musician friends come out, build a fire, make cowboy coffee, and play music," Brewton said. "But the mosquitoes have always been an issue because most of our friends live in town and aren't used to it."
Brewton hopes this year will be different now that mosquito control is finally treating his neighborhood. Collier Mosquito Control District will begin spraying Six L's Farm, Port of the Islands, Ave Maria, Immokalee, and areas north of Golden Gate Estates. This marks the first time these communities will receive mosquito treatments.
Patrick Linn, the district’s executive director, explained the importance of expanding the district’s coverage to prevent mosquito-borne diseases.
"In the long run, we’ll cover upwards of 30,000 homes," Linn said. "And what we want to do is be in those areas and have a good handle on the disease threat."
The district is also using a new drone that carries 40 gallons of treatment, offering a quicker and more efficient option compared to helicopters and planes. This is all funded by local taxes. Linn says 71% of voters supported expanding mosquito control in the recent referendum.
Although most people are in favor, some are concerned about the health risks of chemical treatments. Linn reassured the public, stating that the district uses a method called ultra-low-volume spraying, which uses less than half an ounce of chemicals per acre.
"The droplets are tiny, and the risk to people is minimal compared to the benefit," Linn said.
Immokalee, Ave Maria, and Six L's Farm will be treated by airplane at 9 tonight.
