Residents of Natoma Drive, just off Winkler Road in Fort Myers, are dealing with the aftermath of flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. People are growing tired and frustrated after the history of flooding in their neighborhood, which sits along Whiskey Creek.
Kirsten Fritzsche, a longtime resident, expressed her frustration, stating, “We’ve just been constantly storm prepping and adapting to the weather.”
She woke up the morning after Helene passed by Southwest Florida to streets submerged in floodwater.
Fritzsche’s garage was completely flooded, resulting in the loss of valuable possessions. Fritzsche and her next-door neighbor both lost their cars.
She and other neighbors are considering measures to protect her home, such as installing vinyl wall paneling to avoid the need for frequent drywall repairs and rethinking parking arrangements.
Meanwhile, for some residents, the ongoing struggle has led to a decision to pack it up.
Mike Komar, who has lived in the area for 21 years, voiced his exhaustion after renovating his home twice due to flooding. The impact of Helene made him decide to prepare his house for sale.
“I’m done. I love the neighborhood and my neighbors, but I just don’t want to do this again,” Komar expressed.
As the community navigates the aftermath of severe weather, the desire for long-term solutions and stability continues to grow.
