The Naples Police Department is currently increasing traffic enforcement in hotspot areas in order to reduce vehicle crashes. Many of those areas include schools, and other walkable portions of the city with large amounts of pedestrians.
The program, dubbed "Operation Safe Streets," is focused on the following violations:
- Red light running
- Speeding in school zones
- Ignorance of traffic signals
- Stopping at crosswalks
"Operation Safe Streets is an operation that we're putting together to really just focus on safety," said Lt Bryan McGinn, of the Naples Police Department.
In August and September of 2024, 121 vehicle crashes were reported in the city of Naples, according to the Department. The large amount of accidents, in combination with citizen complaints, prompted this program, per NPD.
"Most times, what we see is crashes related to distracted driving. And that can be any number of things, whether it's cellphone-related or just, you know, not paying attention or what have you," added McGinn.
Since the program began, the city has seen a 20% reduction in crashes. The program will continue until after the high season and conclude in March.
