The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking team is monitoring several tropical features across the Atlantic basin including two named storm systems, Hurricane Kirk and Tropical Storm Leslie .
Of all of the features being watched in the tropics though, it's a currently disorganized area of tropical moisture between the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico we need to watch the most.
The area highlighted in orange is the prime zone for possible development closest to Florida. As of Friday, the chance of at least a tropical depression forming somewhere within this area is at 40%.
Regardless of development, higher rain chances will move into our area starting on Sunday and lingering through the middle of next week as tropical moisture moves out of the Caribbean and into the Gulf of Mexico.
Though it still appears a strong wind and storm surge-driven system is unlikely at this point keep in mind that even disorganized systems can be impactful, especially with rainfall.
Forecast data suggests over the course of the next week many parts of our area will see between 4 and 7" of rain. It's important to stress that these rainfall figures are over the next seven days and subject to change as conditions evolve.
Outside of the area we're watching over the Gulf of Mexico there are two named systems in the eastern Atlantic Ocean.
The strongest of the systems is Hurricane Kirk, which is now a Category 4 hurricane.
Kirk is tracking northwestward across the open Atlantic and poses no threat to land because of the steering currents over the ocean.
Tropical Storm Leslie is located just east of Kirk and also poses no threat to land. Leslie is expected to track west and pull north heading into next week over the open Atlantic.
