The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office arrested a man accused of fraudulently using a business account to buy and resell paint to contractors.
Nelson Jeovany Hernandez Gonzalez, 28, is accused of spending $4,746.31 on a business charge account for the purchase of paint supplies at a Port Charlotte Sherwin Williams store.
Detectives say through investigations they discovered Gonzalez was reselling the paint at a lower cost to other contractors.
Detectives say they also discovered that Gonzalez attempted to do this in Lee County as well, but the stores there would not sell him the large amounts he was trying to purchase at once.
CCSO is warning the community of new contractor scams that have been popping up in Charlotte County.
In the wake of any major storm or damaging event, scammers come out in search of people in desperate need of repair.
In these new scams, large orders for construction materials are placed and paid with a credit card, which is stolen.
Since credit card payments typically take two to three days to process, scammers hire a courier service to pick up the materials and immediately deliver them to an address where they can collect the items.
By the time the stolen card payment is discovered and reported, they have already taken the materials and left the area.
Deputies say Gonzalez is just one example of many that have been popping up around Charlotte County.
