A home along Estero Boulevard in Fort Myers Beach, abandoned since Hurricane Ian, has become home for thousands of honeybees.
The property owner hasn't been around since Ian. Since the home has been neglected by its owner, leading nature to reclaim the space.
The massive beehive, likely hidden when the home was first vacated, has grown significantly, experts say an estimated 20,000 to 50,000 bees. Despite its intimidating appearance, Ranger Rob, a naturalist at the Pink Shell Beach Resort, reports that people don't have to worry about these honeybees.
"They don't care about us at all," he said, noting that these are not aggressive creatures.
In July, the town of Fort Myers Beach notified the property owner that the home needed to be demolished due to safety concern, but the owner’s lawyer claims the town wouldn't give details about why the building is unsafe. He also argued thedemolition notice wasn't properly posted.
Ranger Rob hopes for the safe relocation of the bees, emphasizing their critical role in pollinating the regrowing plants on the island.
NBC2 tried to reach out to the owner and his lawyer, but we haven't heard back.
