Tropical Storm Milton is forecast to intensify into a major hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico as it moves toward Florida over the next few days.
Milton has the potential to be a major and impactful system on the west coast of the state, where many places are still in recovery mode from Hurricane Helene's recent storm surge.
NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking is monitoring the storm, and as of 8 a.m. Sunday, Milton has strengthened with winds now sustained at 60 mph with a forward motion to the east at 5 mph.
Milton is about 860 miles west-southwest of Tampa. Hurricane and storm surge watches are expected to be issued for parts of Florida on Sunday.
It is important not to focus on the center of the forecast cone. The cone communicates where the center of the hurricane is most likely to be at a certain point in time.
