Deputies in Hendry County announced the arrest of two teens in connection with the deadly shooting of a 16-year-old Clewiston girl.
Hendry County deputies arrested Roosevelt Adderly III, 15, and Jayden Lawson, 15, in connection with the deadly shooting of 16-year-old Ja'Yhanna Johnson.
Adderly is Johnson's cousin, according to the Hendry County Sheriff's Office.
HCSO Sheriff Steve Whidden said both Adderly and Lawson were "known gang members" and were waiting for members of a rival gang they believed were at the party.
Deputies said while they were outside, they saw people who they believed were the ones they were looking for and opened fire.
Johnson was shot by a stray bullet while at a party Friday night around 11 p.m. at Harlem Gardens in Clewiston.
Deputies in the area reportedly heard the gunshots and found Johnson lying face down with a gunshot wound to the back of her head.
They attempted to perform CPR until medics arrived, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Adderly and Lawson were arrested and face charges of second-degree homicide. According to their arrest reports, Lawson identified himself as a shooter at the crime scene. Lawson said he only shot once before his firearm malfunctioned and couldn't shoot anymore.
He told the HCSO he had a .9 mm Keltic firearm and lost it as he fled the scene.
According to the report, Lawson also identified Adderly as a second shooter and told detectives "he was shooting or whatever," referring to Adderly.
The HCSO said Lawson told investigators Adderly fired so many shots that he ran out of bullets.
They made their first appearance Wednesday.
According to the HCSO, Adderly and Lawson were transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice and were ordered to be held in secure detention for 21 days.
An arraignment hearing for them has been scheduled for Oct. 29 at 9 a.m. in Hendry County.
Johnson was a cheerleader at Clewiston High School. Her family and friends say she was loved by many people. Now, they are left grieving with broken hearts, hoping for justice soon.
