The city of Cape Coral honored Michael Gordon at Wednesday's city council meeting, after he dove into a pond where an elderly woman's car crashed in the Isles of Porto Vista back on September 9th.
"I was not expecting any of this to, you know, to take place, to be completely honest. I was just doing what I thought was the right thing to do at the time," said Gordon.
Gordon said he saw the car was sinking fast and he knew he had to act fast, so he jumped in and got the woman out.
"To get her back to the shore, that was the only thing in my head," said Gordon. "She just popped up just as I was getting to her, and then I grabbed her, I mean, she’s definitely older; she needed assistance."
The community now calling Gordon a hero and nominating him to be recognized by the city.
"I wasn't surprised, because that's the kind of person Mike is. I hear through the news that firefighters are nominated for awards for life saving and I figured why not a normal citizen like Mike to be acknowledged for his heroics," said Gordon's neighbor Craig Orndor.
Gordon said all this had led him to start a career with the Cape Coral Police Department, so he can help even more people.
