Study: Florida ranks worst state for cyclist deaths in the US

Recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed Florida as the most unsafe state for cycling in the United States.

Luggage shipping company, My Baggage , analyzed data from the NHTSA on the number of people riding a bike that are killed in crashes across America between 2018 and 2022.

These figures were compared with the population to reveal the states with the highest average yearly number of cyclist killed in fatal crashes per one million people.

According to additional data from the United States Census Bureau , Florida is the worst state in America for cycling with 8.4 cyclists killed every year per one million people.

Studies rank Florida as the most dangerous state to cycle in the country. Between 2018 and 2022, approximately 1,036 cyclists were killed in crashes.

Florida also has the highest percentage of cyclists fatalities nationwide, as data says the state makes up 5.38% of all motor vehicle deaths during that period.

NHTSA has a fatality and injury reporting system tool used to search data.

Overall, 2022 was reported as the worst year, with June ranking as the worst month for cycling deaths.

An average of 33.16 cyclists per 10 million people died in a fatal crash over the course of 2022, while 3.10 deaths were reported in June.

Data was taken from the NHTSA for the period of 2018 to 2022, and is shown by state, year, month, hour of day and by day of week. Both total for all years covered and averaged by year.

These figures were compared with each state’s average population size over these years to find out the average number of cyclists killed in fatal crashes per 1 million population.

The states were then ranked from highest to lowest to reveal the worst spots for cyclists nationwide.
