Friday night was the first game where 16-year-old Ja'yhanna's friends had to cheer without her after a stray bullet took her life last week.
“Just pain. I know what the family is going through. It touches everyone,” said Barbara Robinson, a friend of Ja'yhanna's grandma.
Robinson said it was an emotional moment listening to Ja'yhanna's friends honor her at the game and seeing empty bleachers where her family used to sit.
“Every game, her grandmother, her mother, they will be sitting at the bleachers watching her as she cheered,” Robinson said.
Two teens have been arrested in Johnson’s case. One of the suspects is Johnson's own cousin.
With homecoming next week, Robinson said Ja'yhanna's grandma already bought her homecoming dress, but she is still going to be able to wear it.
“She was like, my baby will wear her dress. I will bury my baby in her dress,” Robinson said.
Ja'yhanna's family says they're hosting a candlelight vigil at the Harlem gym this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Her funeral will be next Saturday.
