Oscar strengthens into hurricane
After organizing quickly into a tropical storm Saturday morning, Oscar has now reached hurricane status north of Hispaniola near the Turks and Caicos.
As of 2 p.m. Saturday, Hurricane Oscar is moving west at 12 mph, with maximum sustained winds at 80 mph.
Oscar is expected to bring hurricane conditions to portions of the southeastern Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands and eastern Cuba during the next day or so. Hurricane Warnings has been issued for those locations.
Oscar is forecast to eventually turn north across the southern Bahamas early next week.
A stalled front southeast of Florida will keep the storm far enough away from Florida so that we won't see any tropical threats locally.
Nadine makes landfall in Belize
In addition to Oscar, we're also tracking Tropical Storm Nadine, which formed early Saturday morning in the far western Caribbean.
Nadine made landfall over Belize early Saturday afternoon, bringing tropical storm conditions across the Yucatan Peninsula.
Thankfully for Florida, a strong ridge of high pressure over the central U.S. will keep the system moving west and well south of our state.
