The South County Regional Park Recreation Center in Charlotte County is a disaster recovery center following Milton.
Several Charlotte County residents saw a lot of damage from Helene and then Milton, so FEMA said they are trying to step in and help.
Both hurricanes brought a lot more storm surge than people expected.
Charlotte County resident Sherri Breeze said Hurricane Milton made her place unlivable. She still has no air conditioning or hot water.
"I've recently had to get a travel trailer, and we're living in that in the driveway until the landlord can fix the property that I rent," she said.
Troy York with FEMA said if you were damaged from one storm and got help from FEMA, but were damaged again from Milton, you need to apply again.
York said you should be specific when explaining your damage to FEMA.
"It is very important that you are able to present everything that you need by way of a recovery effort," he said. For example, "if you need a place to stay, if you need assistance in cleaning out, mucking out."
Breeze went to the disaster recovery center and had a great experience.
"They asked all the right questions," Breeze said. "The guys were really nice about it. They were really thorough."
York said they had a great turnout on the first day. He wants to remind people, that FEMA is not the place to get a complete return on your damage, but rather, the first moves toward the road to recovery.
