The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking Team is closely monitoring the movement of Hurricane Oscar over the Atlantic Ocean.
Oscar quickly organized into a named system on Saturday morning and is bringing hurricane-force weather conditions to parts of the Turks and Caicos. As the storm moves, it will bring stormy weather to parts of the Bahamas and eastern Cuba through Tuesday.
As of late Sunday morning, Oscar is moving west-southwest at 12 mph, with maximum sustained winds at 80 mph.
Hurricane Warnings are active for the Turks and Caicos, southern Bahamas and eastern Cuba.
Despite Oscar's relatively close proximity to Florida, it's important to stress that the storm is forecast to turn north across the Bahamas early next week and not be a direct threat to the peninsula.
Florida is being spared any direct impacts from Oscar thanks in part to a stalled front southeast of our state and a strong ridge of high pressure across the eastern half of the United States.
The image below shows a collection of tropical weather-specific forecast models. Each line depicts where a particular model depicts the center of the storm to move over time.
The influences of the stalled front east of Florida forcing the storm to make a sharp turn is very noticeable as no data shows the possibility of the system moving toward the state.
As of late Sunday morning, Nadine has weakened to remnants.
Thankfully for Florida, a strong ridge of high pressure over the central U.S. will keep the system moving west and well south of our state.
The late-season developments of Nadine and Oscar this weekend should serve as a good reminder that hurricane season continues until the end of November.
