The Lee County School Board is taking a closer look into a big topic surrounding high school athletics in the state of Florida.
Earlier in 2024, Name, Image and Likeness deals were already approved by the Florida High School Athletic Association.
Now, high schoolers ages 14 to 18 can sign endorsement deals, sell merch, get paid for appearances and more.
Florida is the 36th state to adopt Name, Image and Likeness opportunities for high school athletes.
Permitted Name, Image and Likeness engagements include:
- Commercial endorsements
- Promotional activities
- Social media presence
- Product advertisements
- Service advertisements
The board says if student athletes got paid for playing the sport potential problems would arise - including tax issues and athletes being taken advantage of.
The district is currently collaborating with all stakeholders in the development of a policy.
The School Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday as they will take a closer look into the limitations.
