A Cape Coral mother is pleading for justice after a hit-and-run driver almost killed her daughter.
Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Joan Buheit got the call no parent wants to hear.
"She said there had been an accident at Skyline and Cape Coral Parkway, and Jessica had been run over by a car," Buheit said.
Jessica Buheit was taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center with serious injuries. The 32-year-old is still bedridden with a broken pelvic bone, head trauma and a hyperextended arm. Her face and body are also covered in cuts and bruises.
"It makes me angry. It makes me very sad how somebody couldn't take responsibility for what they've done to my daughter, and it could have lifelong implications for her," Buheit said.
Due to the severity of her injuries, Jessica doesn't remember much. However, a witness says a black SUV or truck with a topper was traveling down Cape Coral Parkway when it turned right on Skyline Boulevard and hit Jessica. She was riding an electric scooter and was in the right-of-way. The driver did not stop.
"She has some learning disabilities. She doesn't understand why somebody would take off and just leave her there in the middle of the road, and I'm 100% with her," Buheit said.
Joan says CCPD is checking cameras in the area, but many have not been working since Hurricane Milton. She hopes someone, somewhere, knows something.
"I want justice for my daughter. She deserves it. She did not deserve this accident. I really just want justice for her." Buheit said.
