Six years later, the Fort Myers Police Department is trying to keep Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller's legacy alive. One of the two new K-9s the department will receive in November will be donated by the Miller family.
"He lost his life in the line of duty on a call for service. It was a terrible, tragic event for our community and our police department," said Sgt. Jari Sanders.
Fort Myers police still think about the loss of Officer Jobbers-Miller every day.
"His family comes around a lot; his sister still works for us. So obviously, we're reminded by it a lot, but in a good way."
Sgt. Sanders told NBC2 that inside their department, Officer Jobbers-Miller's picture is on the wall. Outside, his name is on the officer memorial, and even a few miles away, a street is named for the officer who was killed in 2018. Wisner Desmaret shot Jobbers-Miller with his own gun.
The new K-9 will be brought to the department next month from Germany, thanks to the Miller family.
"We are so lucky that they want to continue providing things for us when we feel like we should be doing that to them every day. But they keep coming to us asking, how can they help us? This is another way that they're willing to help us," said Sanders.
"Every time that dog is out there doing work on the street or helping the community, we'll know that's in honor of Adam and his family," he added.
Sergeant Sanders told NBC2 that these K-9s are expensive, and the one being donated to the department will cost around $10,000 to $13,000. Once the K-9 is brought to Fort Myers, a new handler will undergo training for several months.
