Two women said they found two kittens dumped on the side of the road inside a backpack in Cape Coral.
On Saturday morning, Sherie Davis and Pamela Snook were enjoying a walk with their dogs along NW 11th Place. As they approached NW 18th Street, they saw a children’s backpack lying abandoned.
Davis said, "Look, Pam! There’s a backpack! Maybe there’s a million dollars in it!"
But as they got closer, laughter turned to concern. What if a child had been kidnapped?
Deciding to investigate, they unzipped the backpack and found two frightened kittens.
"People need to think twice about what they do with animals; there are resources available for situations like this," Snook said.
The women took the kittens to the Cape Coral Animal Shelter.
The shelter employees said they would notify the police about the incident and look into it further.
NBC2 reached out to the Cape Coral Police Department and Lee County Domestic Animal Services to find out if they were investigating. Both agencies are now looking into this.
