Lions Park along US-41 in Fort Myers has gotten a major makeover two years after Hurricane Ian ravaged through and damaged the lights and playground.
Now, a new playground has made its way in so families can now enjoy, and that is just one of several new upgrades.
There are also new painted murals, a refurbished lion statue, refurbished tennis and basketball courts and one of the main new features, pickleball courts. Additionally, even bigger drains were installed to avoid clogging.
It took quite some time to rebuild the park, but it has finally arrived.
Over the years there has been controversy over Lions Park being a haven for the homeless.
The City of Fort Myers Park and Recreation Director, Elgin Hicks, says the goal now is to keep malicious activity out of the area and make it a family-friendly and safe park.
"When you have something that's dormant, it kind of attracts bad activity. So, you know, we wanted to deteriorate activity and just really activate it," Hicks said. "We want families to have a nice, secure and fun atmosphere so they can get out and enjoy their life."
The soccer fields are what is still being worked on, but it is all piecing together.
Tuesday marks the grand opening at 10 a.m., and the community is invited to join.
