A decadelong Halloween tradition in Golden Gate Estates is about to have its final scream!
Elaine Sharp, who started decorating her entire property with spooky decorations back in 2014, has announced that this will be the last year for her beloved haunted display along 14th Avenue Southeast. The "last house on the left" has been drawing children who aren't able to trick-or-treat in the rural area for nearly a dozen years.
"It's all about the kids. It brings me so much joy to know they have a nice Halloween," said Sharp.
Each October, her typical Golden Gate Estates rural property transforms into a chilling Halloween spectacle, complete with handmade decorations, electric exhibits and eerie sounds, luring families and trick-or-treaters. Despite Golden Gate Estates’ lack of sidewalks and its common distance between homes, Sharp’s haunt draws in children and parents alike, such as 6-year-old Jason Tillman, who loved both the skeletons and a giant spider he spotted.
“Since I have two dogs at my house, these two are my favorite,” said Jason, pointing out decorations that reminded him of his labradoodle and Lab at home.
Sharp’s journey into the world of Halloween fright nights began when she and her son attended a “haunt convention” while living in Pennsylvania years ago.
“I wanted to have a Halloween party,” Sharp said. “So my son and I went to a haunt convention just to get ideas on decorating, and I was hooked from there. I couldn't stop!”
The haunted display runs each night from 7 to 9 p.m., and Halloween night will mark its final appearance. After that, Sharp plans to post details on Facebook, inviting those interested to purchase items from her haunt.
“The kids love it. A lot of them want to know how things are made ... I’m hoping the next generation now takes over," said Sharp.
