Cape Coral is planning changes to the Bimini Basin area, which could affect boaters. The city is seeking to limit how long boats can anchor in the basin to help manage the area during its redevelopment. The proposed rule would cap boat anchoring at 45 days per six months.
This comes after the city’s purchase of 19 acres to modernize the area, forcing landlords to displace local tenants. Residents like Johnny Skinner, who lives near the basin, worry the new restrictions will further limit their freedoms.
"It’s like they’re trying to turn Cape Coral into the next Miami," Skinner said, noting that the changes could negatively impact the community.
However, boaters like Joe Grygiel, who also lives along the basin, support the restrictions. He argues that limiting anchoring could reduce pollution and help manage overcrowding and derelict boats.
"A few years ago, the water quality here was poor due to boats staying too long," he said.
The city insists these limitations are temporary until a permanent mooring field is established.
A public hearing on the proposed changes will take place on Nov. 19 at the County Commissioners meeting. Boaters and residents have the opportunity to make their voices heard on the matter at this meeting.
