Florida is the third-biggest prize of the night in electoral votes, but Trump’s win is no surprise since Florida has been trending Republican for the past decade.

The last Democrat to carry Florida was Barack Obama in 2012, but it since has slipped decidedly into GOP ranks in statewide elections.

Ron DeSantis won reelection by nearly 20 percentage points in 2022, a political lifetime after the contested 2000 presidential election came down to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to stop the recount in the race between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush.

Why the AP called Florida

When AP called the race, Trump led Harris by 11 percentage points with about 80% of the expected vote reported. Trump was generally doing better around the state than he did four years ago, including in Miami-Dade County, home to Miami, where he was winning the county with 55% of the vote. He won 46% there in 2020. Trump won Florida by 3 percentage points in 2020 and by a single point in 2016.

Amendment 3 - Recreational Marijuana

Florida Amendment 3 would have legalized recreational marijuana for adults over 21, allowing the purchase, possession, and use of up to three ounces. The amendment required a 60% supermajority vote to pass.

Florida's Amendment 4 would have enshrined abortion rights in the state constitution by prohibiting state laws that restrict or penalize abortions before fetal viability. The amendment failed to pass by a 60% supermajority.

U.S. SENATE

SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT

CLICK HERE FOR ALL LEE COUNTY RACES | For the first time in 50 years, Lee County voters elected their superintendent in the 2024 general election. This race follows a 2022 referendum, making the superintendent position elected, marking a significant change in the district's leadership structure.

Republican Denise Carlin will become the new superintendent. She focused her campaign on improving student outcomes and enhancing school safety.

Democrat Victor Arias, a former attorney for the district, ran on a platform of transparency, teacher retention, and community engagement. He emphasized his experience in school law and administration.
