The Collier County Sheriff's Office arrested a man accused of carrying 'enough fentanyl to kill 3,000 people' on Tuesday.
Jeff Bastien, 36, is facing multiple charges after being arrested on Tuesday.
Deputies say around 10:30 p.m., they saw Bastien riding a bike along Georgia Avenue without any lights, which is a violation of Florida law.
Deputies attempted to stop Bastien but said he continued riding his bike, ignoring their emergency lights.
Reports say deputies positioned their car in front of him, but Bastien got off his bike and ran.
Bastien appeared to discard items from his pockets as he ran from deputies, per reports.
Deputies were able to catch Bastien and place him under arrest. During a search, deputies said they found 5.6 grams of fentanyl in his jacket pocket, along with marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
"I am strongly committed to keeping fentanyl out of our community," Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said. "Thanks to alert deputies, this deadly drug was removed from our community, and this individual is behind bars where he belongs."
According to reports, Bastien is a registered felon in Florida, including for fentanyl trafficking in 2021 — which he reportedly served three years in prison for.
Bastien is facing charges of trafficking fentanyl and resisting an officer.
