The Florida Department of Health in Collier County is warning the public of blue-green algae in Lake Avalon.
According to DOH-Collier, blue-green algae is a type of bacteria common in bodies of freshwater in Florida that has the potential to produce harmful toxins.
Water sample testing by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection is underway to test if toxins from blue-green algae are present in the lake.
DOH-Collier states that it is important to exercise caution, even if toxins have not been confirmed as environmental conditions can change at any time.
Residents & visitors are advised to take precautions such as avoiding contact with waters, keeping pets away, and not eat shellfish caught in waters with algae blooms present.
Signs of blue-green algae
- Will form blooms when rapid growth of algae occurs that discolor water and create floating mats on the water that smell bad.
- Can appear as scum, foam, or 'paint' on the surface of water in various colors.
- Blue-green algae may not always be visible, but it can still be present in the water.
