Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis and the Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS) launched the "My Safe Florida Condo" pilot program. It will help protect residents who live in condos from hurricanes.
This program will give residents free building inspections and money to ensure their homes can withstand hurricane winds.
Although it is a pilot program, the state says if all goes well, this new initiative could potentially lower wind insurance premiums.
Mitigation projects allowed by this program are:
- Opening protection, including exterior doors, garage doors, windows and skylights.
- Reinforcing roof-to-wall connections.
- Improving the strength of roof-deck attachments.
- Secondary water resistance for the roof.
Condo associations must be within 15 miles of the coastline to be eligible.
There is a $175,000 cap on the grant contribution per association.
The State says what they learn from My Safe Florida Condo will help determine the future of the pilot program going forward.
Once your condo goes through the free inspection, which identifies existing hurricane-resistant features of its properties and potential recommendations for approved improvements, the association may apply for a mitigation grant to implement the improvements recommended in its Initial Inspection Report.
