The town of Fort Myers Beach approved a trail expansion project through the area on Monday.
In early November, the town council discussed the BERT Project. The council was in favor of a nearly 15-mile-long trail that will connect to the 42-mile rail trail.
The idea is to get more people to the island by walking and biking while also connecting you to local shops, breweries and coffee shops.
The original project is still waiting for state and federal funding. Project officials say they need it by March 2026.
The Bonita Estero rail trail alone is said to be able to offer 70,000 residents access within a 10-minute bike ride, and it'll be in close proximity to 11 schools in Southwest Florida, which serves 10,000 students within one mile.
The town council is expected to say yes on Monday, moving forward with the project to connect the trail through Fort Myers Beach.
However, according to the last council meeting, leaders with the trail project said they are still waiting on a Lee County commissioner's decision.
