FEMA has placed the Town of Fort Myers Beach on probation from the National Flood Insurance Program.
Officials said FEMA will also retrograde the town's Community Rating System classification, according to a news release from the Town of Fort Myers Beach.
With Fort Myers Beach's community rating being retrograded, discounts on NFIP premiums that allowed residents to save up to 25% percent were removed.
Fort Myers Beach officials said they are working with FEMA to regain benefits from the program.
According to the news release, Fort Myers Beach received notice from FEMA about the possible retrograde in March 2024. Officials said they worked for months to submit the documents requested by FEMA.
The town submitted a corrective action plan before the Nov. 18 deadline, according to the release.
“I am disappointed that FEMA has made the decision to put the Town on probation. Town staff is committed to following our FEMA-approved plan and will continue to collaborate with FEMA and FDEM to regain our NFIP discount and CRS classification,” Andrew Hyatt, town manager of Fort Myers Beach, said via news release.
FEMA also notified Lee County that unincorporated Lee County residents with policies issued under the NFIP will maintain the discount rate of 25%.
