A Port Charlotte man is behind bars, facing multiple charges after being accused of exploiting an older man. Charlotte County deputies say Dustin Campbell stole nearly $6,000 in just a month.
According to authorities, when detectives questioned Campbell, he claimed he was a caretaker for the 86-year-old victim, Jerry Smyth, who has dementia. Campbell said he "deserved" the money.
However, Smyth tells a completely different story.
"He was homeless. I let him stay in my home for free," Smyth said. "I fed him and everything."
Smyth had no idea that Campbell stole money from his bank account through CashApp until a friend noticed suspicious activity and reported it.
Deputies say Campbell linked Smyth's bank information to his own CashApp account and transferred the money to himself.
